Writer vs Author: The (Not-So-Obvious) Difference between Writer and Author

writer

At first glance, the title of being an author seems synonymous to being a writer. The steps to becoming a writer and an author are not that different. But when intensively examined, there’s an important difference between writer and author. In the world of publishing, as Dean Wesley Smith states, “a writer is consider as only a person who writes, while an author is a person who has written.” All authors are considered writers but not all writers are authors. Read on to further understand the distinction.

After writing, an author thinks how to market the story.

Is author and writer the same thing? Breaking it down, one of the many differences lies after authors/writers penned their books. Authors write to market their ideas, either pitch them to big publishers, or self-publish. An author would never stop promoting his/her work, and would often pay to get it perfected. They tend to measure their book’s success through the number of sales. So instead of writing the next one, they’re stuck with their current book until they’re satisfied with the result.

After writing, a writer thinks on the next story.

Writers are hungry for more writing—to creating the next plot, new characters, and tensions. They’re more into their next book than spending ridiculous amount of time in social media to promote their books. They mostly enjoy the sheer process of writing, and as soon they’ve published a story, they’ll likely to continue on writing another one.

An author is an individual who creates the content, plot, and idea of the written work.

Authors developed their own plot and create the story’s structure on their own. They also make sure that their book is copyrighted under the law so no one can steal their original ideas. Authors are more likely to write when they really want to write something. If there’s no something good to write, authors are busy promoting their work over different platforms.

A writer is an individual who writes any literary piece.

Whether these are magazines, journals, newspapers, short stories, or poems, a writer consistently writes, day in day out. They pen down someone else’s plot or stories—transforming these ideas into a credible and cohesive piece. Most writers are freelancers, staff writers working in media, marketing, or publishing industries, while most authors are fiction writers. Writers are people who pay attention to the opinions of other people, and spend their time and life devise variety of writing methods, sharpening their skills depending on the genre of writing. Other way to put it, writers are service-oriented artist that provide satisfaction to others.

The difference between writer and author can be subtle, yet can bring impact on one’s identity. However, these distinctions are not to daunt you in any way. That being an author is far better than being a writer, or the other way around. No, we’re not implying to absolutely stick with one literary path. Both titles are equally great and powerful. If you love impelling yourself to writing for days, butt in chair hands on keyboard, become a writer and help others convey their ideas clearly. But if you are serious on becoming an author, work with your book and tell the world.
